What is the right size exactly? Have you been wearing shoes in a wrong size or fitting all these while and not know it?
In fact studies have shown that 8 out of 10 women are wearing shoes that are ill fitting shoes for years and don’t know it. Some of the effects of wearing ill-fitting shoes range from benign conditions such as being unable to walk properly or experiencing pain when they walk to severe medical conditions such as formation of bunions.
So how do we prevent this? How do we know if the shoe fits? (I suddenly get reminded of Disney’s Cinderella). Below are some points to check whenever you’re out shopping for a new pair of shoes:
Choose the right length
– a good pair of shoes should fit the length of your feet almost perfectly. There should not be any gap between your heeland the back of the shoe. This is THE NUMBER 1 MISTAKE most women make.
Gap between heels and bone is big NO NO.
If the shoe is too long for you, you will find your foot slipping forward continuously as you walk. This is even more so in the case of high heels when already 90% of your weight is on the balls of your feet and your toes. The friction from slipping forward continuously will result in painful blisters. Ouch.
No gap is good. The shoe should not be able to be removed too easily from the feet – try removing the shoe by flexing your foot (no assistance from the hands) and you should hear a *Plop* sound. If you hear it, it’s good.

2. Choose the right fitting
The widest part of your feet – between the 2 most protruding bones on the left side and right side of the foot is known as the fitting.

Your fitting is too tight when you see your pinky toe peeking through underneath the leather of your shoe.
When it comes to sandals and strappy heels, PLEASE, keep your pinky toes inside! They are ugly and will hurt your foot when you walk! THIS IS A FASHION FELONY PLEASE….
Does this mean we can never wear pointy toe shoes?
ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE. Our body has an amazing way of adapting and so do your feet. The problem comes when you continually wear the same pair of ill-fitting shoes over many days and some even months or years! This is when things such as bunions form.
So it is okay to wear pointy toe shoes for that one day as long as you change to a more comfortable/better fitting pair the next day.
Points to Note:
- Every person’s feet is unique and it is impossible for shoe companies to produce a shoe that fits your feet PERFECTLY. The best that shoe manufacturers can do is to find an average length and fitting.
- If a shoe’s length is perfect but the fitting at the toe box is too tight, go up HALF A SIZE. You can fill the extra space with heel grip stick ons such as the picture below. Any more and the length will be too ill fitting.
- If you suffer from severe bunions or other deformities, it is best to consider doing bespoke shoes or bespoke orthopedic shoes.
- Certain materials such as leather will feel abit tighter in the beginning but will stretch to a more comfortable fit over time – this is normal. Why you should still choose leather over PU shoes – refer to my earlier post here.
